Immune reactions to mold toxins are extremely common, poorly diagnosed and lead to a number of chronic conditions.
AN ACCURATE DIAGNOSIS OF MOLD TOXICITY MAY REVEAL THE ROOT CAUSE OF YOUR HEALTH CONCERNS.
Give yourself the opportunity to tell the doctor what you have been experiencing and how it got to this stage.
Based on that conversation and the results of your labs, the nature, degree and source of your health issues will be determined.
An individualized treatment plan will be recommended, started and adjusted as needed based on your feedback until you experience thriving optimal health.
Give your body the best opportunity to fight illness, prevent and reverse chronic disease.
“96% of people who suffer from chronic sinusitis are ‘fungal sensitized,’ meaning they have immune responses triggered by inhaled fungal organisms.”

These mold toxicity symptoms listed below are common and may cause lots of suffering. It is possible to reduce or eliminate them when they are properly diagnosed and treated.
Anxiety
As the brain accumulates higher levels of the mold toxins, glutamate, and PEA, two powerful, electrifying brain chemicals become elevated, producing excessive electrical activity in the brain that may lead to anxiety.
Ataxia
Ataxia, which is the loss of agility in body movements, is commonly seen as a side effect from ingestion of aflatoxin.
Autoimmune Disease
Mold can trigger, exacerbate, or perpetuate the inflammatory storm. According to the CDC, “For some people, mold can cause a stuffy nose, sore throat, coughing or wheezing, burning eyes, or skin rash. People with asthma or who are allergic to mold may have severe reactions. Immune-compromised people and people with chronic lung disease may get infections in their lungs from mold.”
Cancer
Over time, mold exposure can lead to chronic disease, including cancer. This connection is often overlooked in medicine as a contributing risk factor. Another concern toward mold exposure is its connection with liver cancer.
Mycotoxions are found in a large percentage of cancers due to the fact that they are known to cause cancer in animals by the displacement of DNA base pairs.
Central Nervous System Effects
According to PubMed, “Human exposure to molds, mycotoxins, and water-damaged buildings can cause neurologic and neuropsychiatric signs and symptoms. Many of these clinical features can partly mimic or be similar to classic neurologic disorders including pain syndromes, movement disorders, delirium, dementia, and disorders of balance and coordination.”
Recently, scientists have been studying the effects of mycotoxins on people, and have found that people exposed to both molds and mycotoxins show symptoms of poisoning in multiple organ systems including: the lungs, muscles, central and peripheral nervous systems (Ratnaseelan, A. M., et. al. 2018).
Chest or Joint Pain
This neuro-joint and muscular pain is caused by infection from exposure to certain species of mold. This condition is known as “fungal or mycotic arthritis,” and is much more common than previously believed. These organisms may affect bone or joint tissue causing great pain mimicking arthritis.
Cognitive and Behavioral Changes
Mold chemicals can affect cognition, emotions, and personality. Many people who have been exposed to toxic mold complain of behavioral and neurological problems like what has been called mold rage, psychosis, aggressive and erratic behavior, and depression.
Cold and Flu Symptoms
Mold can cause flu-like symptoms and are similar to those frequently seen in colds.
Convulsions
When mold mycotoxins cause neurotoxicity, it is called myconeurotoxicity, which refers to any adverse effects of exposure to mycotoxins or byproducts of primary and secondary mold metabolism, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on the structural or functional integrity of the developing or adult nervous system.
Black mold may cause tremors, irritability, shaking, seizures, learning disabilities and a host of other mental and neurological issues.
Depression
Because mold toxins shut down hormonal production in the brain’s pituitary gland, patients suffer severe depression and severe chronic fatigue.
Dermatitis and Rashes
A rash caused by mold exposure resembles other types of rashes caused by allergic reactions. Skin rashes from mold may often result from an internal infection. The majority of the time, you won’t even know you’ve been exposed to mold.
Fatigue or Generalized Malaise
The most common symptom of toxic mold is fatigue. Fatigue and toxins (along with parasites and viruses) are a major problem. If your body has to fight off these things all the time, it won’t have any energy left for the actual business of living and healing.
Fever and Chills
Some persons have shortness of breath, cough, muscle aches, fever, chills, night sweats, and profound fatigue. These symptoms usually first appear 2 to 9 hours after exposure and last for 1 to 3 days.
Fibromyalgia
Toxic mold exposure has been linked to chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia (FM), lupus, asthma and other conditions. Mold can have a toxic effect on the human body as it yields harmful chemicals such as mycotoxin. If you have FM, it may be beneficial to get tested for mold.
Gastrointestinal Disturbances
If you have GI infections or IBS that won’t go away, it may be mold. Exposure to household mold can lead to gastrointestinal problems such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bleeding in the intestinal tract, intestinal cramping, and the development of bacterial and yeast infections in the intestinal tract.
Hair Loss
If the capillaries are the blood vessels that the mold spores decide to disrupt, your hair won’t get the appropriate blood flow and will begin to fall out. While short-term exposure to mold can cause temporary hair loss, long-term exposure can lead to consistent hair loss, or even baldness.
Headaches
Headaches are a known symptom of toxic mold exposure — including exposure to stachybotrys chartarum, or black mold. Some headaches from mold exposure can be related to sinus issues caused by the allergic response to mold. Nasal congestion is a common contributing factor.
Heart Problems
Mold can cause a number of heart problems, including myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle), endocarditis (an infection of the lining of the heart), damage to the heart muscle and damage to the heart valves.
Insomnia
Mold-toxic brains produce excessive amounts of glutamate and palmitoylethanolamide. Both are powerful electrifying brain chemicals that are anti-aging when at normal levels, but excessive amounts produce an over-electrified nervous system, insomnia, hair loss, and anxiety.
Learning Disabilities
A brain exposed to toxic indoor mold and mycotoxins is typically not a very happy brain. Research indicates that the spectrum of cognitive impairments caused by mold and mycotoxin exposure are extensive. Many of these mental health conditions are quite prevalent in our society.
Lung Infections
A lung infection can occur when you are exposed to mold for a long time. It causes a debilitating disease that disrupts the normal function of lungs. The body’s reaction to the toxins produced by mold spores may cause permanent scarring of the lung tissue.
The mold spores of pneumocystis may easily enter your lung and cause pneumonia, a lung inflammation that comes along with other illness like the flu.
Memory Loss
Toxic mold exposure has also been linked to more serious, long-term effects like memory loss, insomnia, anxiety, depression, trouble concentrating, and confusion.
Many patients with memory loss and dementia are actually simply toxic from mold, which may be a reversible condition.
Multiple Sclerosis
Toxic mold may be a strong contributor to an exacerbation of multiple sclerosis symptoms.
Muscle Aches
Other symptoms of mold toxicity may include: Musculoskeletal symptoms including muscle weakness, achiness, joint pain, and morning stiffness.
Pulmonary Hemorrhage
A connection has been established between mold and pulmonary hemorrhaging in newborns.
Respiratory Problems
Mold can cause respiratory illness in a number of ways. First, it causes irritation to the delicate lining of the bronchi and the tiny bronchioles in the lungs. Inflammation and irritation of the bronchioles make it difficult to get enough air through, causing wheezing and labored breathing.
Shortness of Breath
Mold toxicity may cause breathing issues including chronic sinus congestion, shortness of breath, breathing difficulty with exercise, sinus nasal drainage, and wheezing.
Sore Throat
Having a dry or sore, irritated throat that does not go away could be a sign that you have a mold problem in your home.
The inflammation in the throat can cause throat pain or discomfort. In addition, tiny mold spores are easily inhaled, and they can cause irritation to the nose, throat, airways, and lungs. This can also lead to a sore throat.
Visual Disturbances
A mold allergy activates a mast cell reaction that results in typical allergic symptoms such as red swollen eyes with profuse watery discharge, sneezing and itchy skin or hives.
A Visual Contrast Sensitivity (VCS) and urine mycotoxin test will be needed to properly diagnose.
Weight Gain or Weight Loss
Another recent finding is that mold toxicity can induce leptin resistance. This occurs when toxic levels of mold enter your body and either alter your gut microbiome or alter your leptin receptors. Either of these have can have the same effect and hinder weight loss.
Wheezing
The wheezing may look like asthma, but it doesn’t respond to the typical treatment of inhalers. Wheezing and shortness of breath are common mold health issues.
“Approximately 70% of the people with confirmed exposure to toxic molds exhibit significant neurotoxicity.”
Mold Facts
Predisposing Factors
Predisposing factors for mold include genetic predisposition, history of exposure to mold or water-damaged buildings, a weakened immune system due to pathogenic burden, and autoimmune diseases.
Rapid Mutations
Fungi have the ability to dodge your immune system by rapidly mutating, while at the same time producing chemicals that suppress your immune system.
Toxic Molds
There are three types of mold – allergenic molds, pathogenic molds and toxic molds. Toxic molds produce mycotoxins like aflatoxins, which grows on peanuts, grains and coffee. Mycotoxins tend to affect more biological systems in your body than do pesticides or heavy metals.
Neurological System
Mycotoxins are so toxic because they can cross directly into your brain and alter your emotional state. Neurological symptoms are commonly seen with mold toxicity. This creates the potential for mold-induced sinusitis to lead to serious brain complications if left untreated.
Chronic Sinusitis
If you have chronic sinusitis, you must rule out a possible fungal infection. Antibiotics and steroids can actually worsen fungal-related infections by destroying your body’s natural biological terrain, creating an internal incubation ground for fungi. Steroids may temporarily decrease inflammation but they suppress your immune response. Thus perpetuating the underlying problem.
