These adrenal fatigue and burnout symptoms listed below are extremely common and cause lots of suffering. It is possible to reduce or eliminate them when they are properly diagnosed and treated.

Allergies

Adrenal burnout may compromise your immune system and exacerbate allergies. It may leave you open to infections so you get sick more often and takes longer to heal.

Anxiousness

Chronically high cortisol from adrenal burnout levels may cause anxiety.

Blood pressure changes

Mild adrenal weakness is usually accompanied by normal to high blood pressure symptoms. As Adrenal fatigue and burnout advances, low blood pressure, at rest or related to posture becomes more prevalent.

Brain fog

Brain fog is a very common adrenal fatigue symptom. The most common time people experience it is in the afternoon, which matches up with the classic afternoon energy crash, as well as afternoon hypoglycemia.

Chronic insomnia

Symptoms of insomnia like not being able to fall asleep or waking up in the middle of the night can be caused by adrenal fatigue.

Cynicism

Not getting enough sleep, feeling stressed out and overwhelmed for long periods of time can cause anyone to feel cynical. Cynicism is the detached attitude many people who suffer from burnout begin to feel – they often lose complete interest in their work.

Depression

About twenty-five percent of what’s considered clinical depression also involves low cortisol while about seventy-five percent of clinical depression also involves high cortisol. The adrenal glands have so much to do with proper immune function, proper blood sugar balance, and with brain function. There’s thousands of cortisol receptors in every part of the brain, and they work in conjunction with each other and neurotransmitters.

Extreme exhaustion

Exhaustion that is relentless is the primary symptom of adrenal fatigue. If you have true adrenal fatigue, you will typically have difficulty dragging yourself out of bed. You can’t get going without that first cup or two of coffee. You rely on sugary snacks and caffeine to get through the day, particularly in the late morning or afternoon.

Fatigue

You may experience adrenal fatigue when your adrenal glands cease to function properly.

Feeling unrefreshed after a night's sleep

Stress and adrenal function affect sleep, particularly the circadian pattern of cortisol secretion by the adrenal glands.

Frequent headaches

Chronic stress can lead to an imbalance in your adrenal glands and cause fatigue-related headaches.

Frequent sore throat

Chronic fatigue can cause a lowered immune system and susceptibality to frequent sore throats.

Heart palpitations

Those with adrenal fatigue very often have chronic hyperventilation problems like shortness of breath, air hunger, etc. Sudden and strong emotions can elicit a “fight or flight” reaction in the body along with a flood of adrenaline and norepinephrine that raises the heart rate and causes heart palpitations.

Hypoglycemia

Hypoglycemia commonly occurs during adrenal fatigue when low epinephrine, norepinephrine and cortisol are combined with the high insulin levels of stress. The low levels of adrenal hormones that can occur during adrenal fatigue may fail to raise blood glucose enough to meet the increased demand.

Inability to focus

The lower levels of cortisol and adrenaline, combined with the disruption in the daily cortisol cycle, are what cause many of the symptoms of adrenal fatigue. The tiredness, inability to focus, disrupted sleep cycles and more can all be traced back to our levels of these stress hormones.

Lack of professional efficacy

The lack of professional efficacy occurs when someone who has burnout feels and acts less efficient at work and fails to accomplish much of anything.

Loss of memory or concentration

An overdose of adrenal gland hormone is poisonous for the hippocampus, which is the part of the brain which is responsible for our concentration abilities and memory. The neurons in this part of the brain become exhausted and may even die due to this long-term stress.

Low body temperature syndrome

Low blood sugar, low blood pressure, low temperature, depression, joint pain and allergies may result from low levels of cortisol.

Low libido

A decrease in libido is often traced to excess stress, which has an impact on the adrenal glands. There are more chemicals involved with sexuality than estrogen and testosterone.

Menstrual irregularities

Your adrenal hormones are involved in the menstrual cycle; It is common for women with adrenal fatigue to have irregular menstrual cycles or even have their cycles completely stop.

Muscle pain

Chronically high cortisol levels can also cause aches and pains such as muscle pain.

Multi-joint pain without redness or swelling

Chronically high cortisol levels can also cause aches and pains such as joint pain.

Nervousness

The adrenal glands and HPA axis become depleted and dysregulated after a long period of emotional stress or chronic illness and may lead to nervousness.

Obesity

The adrenal glands maintain a normal cortisol rhythm (cortisol is a hormone associated with both stress and fat storage). When this rhythm is off, we can become overwhelmed more quickly, fatigued, gain weight, and eventually, develop even more severe health issues such as heart disease or diabetes.

Poor mood

Emotional instability, mood swings, bipolar disorder, anxiety, and irritability are also common symptoms associated with adrenal burnout syndrome.

PMS

Adrenal hormones are important to healthy menstruation, and stress is known to affect the menstrual cycle. It has been observed clinically that many women experiencing adrenal fatigue also experience PMS and tend to have difficulty during perimenopause and menopause.

Salt or sugar cravings

Cravings for sugar are common with adrenal fatigue as they give you a short term energy boost. In the long run, however, it will only deplete your energy further. The intense cravings for sweet sugary snacks (and the opposite end of the spectrum, salt) can be overwhelming.

Sleep disturbance

Sleep disturbances may be a result of adrenal fatigue, stress, exhaustion, and depleted hormone levels.

Tender or swollen lymph nodes in neck or armpits

A common finding during phase three of adrenal burnout may be the constant feeling of a low-grade cold or flu and possibly even swollen lymph nodes around the neck.

Weight changes

Adrenal fatigue may be behind weight loss resistance. Adrenal fatigue interferes with digestive function, contributes to insulin resistance, and contributes to hormonal imbalances in general, another common issue that underlies weight loss resistance.

“Burnout is associated with health risks that include cardiovascular disease, Type II diabetes, high cholesterol, bone and joint pain, fatigue, headaches, gastrointestinal and respiratory issues, and even death before age 45.”

Indigo Integrative Health Clinic is a medical practice staffed with doctors who care.

It is not the typical “medical factory” where you sit in a giant waiting room filling out forms before you are seen by a harried doctor who spends five minutes with you and sends you off with a pharmaceutical prescription. Indigo’s providers do a true consultation with you as a collaborator in your own health care.

A typical new patient consultation consists of the opportunity for you to describe in detail your symptoms, how those symptoms make you feel and how having them affects your life.

At Indigo we treat the whole person, NOT just your symptoms. Integrative medicine differs from most conventional medical practices in that identifying the cause of the symptoms is the primary focus of the diagnostic efforts.

Treatment is designed to address the root cause, not just to interrupt, or mask the symptoms. If your goal is to return to a state of vibrant health, make an appointment to see our doctors and get the correct diagnosis, treatment and care you deserve.

You don’t have to settle for feeling less than your best.

With our holistic, integrative and detailed diagnostics leading the way, you can alleviate adrenal fatigue and burnout issues and regain your energy. Our advanced data interpretation techniques help us to accurately assess your adrenal function and determine which therapies may lead to the best health outcomes.
